Abby at end of JanuaryThe young californian yachtlady, Abigail Sunderland (16, on solo round-the-world trip, homeward) is reported as being in trouble in the Indian Ocean. She has sailed somewhere halfway between Madagaskar and Australia. Weather conditions take 60 knots wind, 20-25 foot wawes - she sent unexpectedly two emergency alerts.
According to the family newsdesk she should be able to find some workaround in the tough situation.
We too trust in you, Abby, and cross our fingers ...

Home again Now, after so
Home again
Now, after so pretty much days we can receive news from the most authentic source, Abby's handwriting. She -according to the plans- arrived home, and just the next day her little brother was born! She expresses her thanks for the interest and activity of her "fan-club". She feels alright, and she enjoys comfort of the home. We can read a short report about the events of the days from the wreckage until the arrival to California.
Abby, we share your happiness on your arrival and on reading your recent post. Even if you do not have an intention to set an urgent sail again, we can be confident so we can hear of you, Zac and the family!
The last month brought big alarm, however, it is our joy so we could be aware of you along this story! We wish good luck, and many success to you! Take care!
This morning Abigail arrived
This morning Abigail arrived to Island of Reunión, where she was welcome by her brother Zac. The parents have had a higher priority engagement at home: the youngest Sunderland sibling, the eight baby is to arrive in any minute.
They fly homeward from here soon and on having return, Tuesday Abigail is to attend a press conference arranged for the media in concern.
On way to Kerguelen Abby
On way to Kerguelen
Abby wrote a news at her blog. Ile de la Reunión, the French fishermen ship picking up Abby, returns at her area of operation around the island of Kerguelen. Abby feels quite alright on the vessel, familiar with the ship.
The plan is that Abby receives a connection at Kerguelen and -as a next stage- she will travel to Reunión Island on her voyage toward home.
(A short comment let the readers know, the family must have resigned ultimately the intention of recovering the yacht Wild Eyes from the Southern Ocean.)
The Abigail rescue is
The Abigail rescue is successful!
According to local time (CET) at about 13:30pm a news arrived on Abby's blog from the parents:
The rescue
Abigail and her yacht was found by the fishermen vessel sent to her rescue, and Abby was transferred to the board of the vessel.
Thanks Godness, the weather provided calm circumstances for the rescue effort: moderate winds and wawes accomodated the action. Abby is quite OK, perhaps she is a bit exhausted. She has a safe way toward a continent and her home.
The parents expressed their thankfullness to the organizations and persons participating any way in the rescue. Wild Eyes, Abby's yacht is more than doubtful whether it can be recovered.
Though the technology and organizedness is at the top, never seen before, we should remember at our clear moments: the Abigail rescue effort was en extraordinary event, and most likely of historical significance. Little Abby spent almost two days in her destroyed, drifting yacht in the middle of the Indian Ocean, exposed to the power of Nature.
A picture tells a story, more
A picture tells a story, more than a hundred of words. There is a report and this photo of the Wild Eyes on Abby's blog. Little girl within mighty ocean ...
The photo was made from the Airbus sent to find Abby's location in the middle of Indian Ocean ....
Abby's yacht wo the rigging
The yacht is halfway between the continents. The distance to Perth (AUS) is the equivalent to that of Budapest-Ural, Budapes-Iceland or Budapest-London twice. The nearest island that makes a destination of sense is Kerguelen. The distance is about 400 nautical miles (750 km's) South-West-South.
Good news! The parents report
Good news! The parents report on Abbey's blog so an australian airplane got to the site and found the yacht. She is upright, but her rigging is down. The storm is leaving. They have radio contact with Abby, she is alright!
Rescue is in progress ...
